I'm slowly getting as much as I can transferred over here to DW. I've got all the feeds done, and I think I've gotten all my friends who have also said they've made the leap. Quite frankly, DW seems to be more happening than LJ. This post is an excellent post that made a lot of sense, and I plan to follow a lot of the advice contained therein.

I feel like overall DW is just less controversial than LJ. The administration doesn't seem to make decisions that upset a great deal of the userbase and they've been stable in their ownership and reliability. I honestly just want a place to put my journal entries and interact with people on occasion and this seems like a good one.

If you have communities or friends to recommend, please do so. I'm off to get lost in the rabbit hole of DW. :)

Sad day

With a heavy heart I am moving my journal to dreamwidth. I've been on LJ for 15 years, and weathered many "LJ is going down!" panics, but this one is different. This time I'm joining the mass exodus prompted by the servers being moved to Russia, and more concerning, the elimination of secure pages. I seriously doubt anyone's going to be data mining my journal, but the very idea makes me uncomfortable and I feel like I can no longer support LJ.

Instead I'll move to a paid account on DW and post there exclusively. I do have my account set to crosspost all of my entries, so technically my journal will be mirrored on LJ, but I won't be checking it or commenting there. I hope all of my friends make the switch as well so I can keep up with you. DW has very easy migration tools and it took less than an hour for them to import my 8,000+ entries, all their comments, and my complete profile.

I'm going through my friends list and looking for posts saying if they've moved to DW and what their username is there so I can add them. If I've missed you, please comment on the DW post and I'll add you posthaste. This post over there is public for exactly that reason.

Love, and happy new year!

Reposted from [livejournal.com profile] harnessphoto who reposted it from [livejournal.com profile] slobberpuppy:

"I've seen it more than a few times this month - people missing the days when LJ was a more active place. It's always nice to share interactions with like-minded folk, and I often find that reading other people's words help give insight into my own life. We are all connected, afterall!

Therefore, I am going to put forth an idea I have been brewing on for some time: The Great LJ Friends Swap! Basically, if there are two (or three, or four, or more...) active folks on your friends list - people who will participate in one anothers' journals - that you think should be connected, then why not suggest such and make the introductions between them? I would be happy to connect anyone who replies to this post with other LJ users whom I think would make a good match, and by virtue of posting this, I am requesting the same - feel free to connect me to people who you think would enjoy our interactions and sharing of ideas.

Feel free to spread this like wildfire if you so desire. The Great LJ Friends Swap has begun!"

If you are interested in being shared or being connected, comment here. Of course, I'd love some new friends of my own if you can think of them! Alternately, post a blurb about yourself in the comments so like-minded people can find you (and read the comments for the vice versa effect).

How brilliant is this idea? LJ's not dead, I've seen that with my own eyes. I just think the population has shrunk, and the groups of interconnected people have become cut off from each other. Let's reunite them and widen circles! Get those friends feeds full again!

The only problem with the infinity scroll on LJ is that if you forget to open the post to comment in a new window then it resets to the top. :P

First world problems. I know.

And so far I'm not seeing any ads. Hunh. I don't have a lot of userpics to work from, but that's okay.

I might post more later, but I just picked Jake up from school and I promised him a dance party in the living room.

Day One

So I've decided that to get back in the swing of things I'm going to post at least once a day in December. Now that it's out there I have to do it, right?

Yesterday I made an advent calendar for the boys. It turned out pretty cute, but I missed my math on the pockets so I have to make the craft sticks I'm using for the activities shorter. I'll probably do that next year though. I'm planning on posting a tutorial over on the Bewhiskered blog. I have a tutorial for the car wallets I made for Jake's 4th birthday party in my head as well. Maybe I can get those things done now that I'm off customs for the season.

Other projects I want to work on during the break include my red riding hood coat that I've had the materials for forever but haven't even opened the pattern and Erik's 2nd birthday party. I also need to make teacher gifts and figure out what I'm getting everyone for Christmas. My niece wants a giant Ruggle for her bedroom, so she's taken care of but everyone else? No clue.

Today the advent calendar is going to tell Jake we're decorating the house and yard so I'd better go get ready for that.

Oh, and Roll Tide! I love my team and hope they win, but honestly just knowing someone from the SEC is going up against Notre Dame makes me giddy. We finally get a chance to shut them up with their we just need a chance and we can beat the snot out of an SEC team talk. But talking football to people who aren't into it is boring so I'll stop. :)`

My paid account is expiring in the next few days and for the first time ever I'm wondering if I want to renew it. I still come here when I need a safe place to vent, or talk about random crap. I'm not comfortable with Facebook and hardly use Twitter. I like keeping up with my friends here.

But more and more I find myself visiting less often. I will probably renew, simply because I don't think I can handle the ads for long. But this place has certainly lost a bit of the shine it once had. And that makes me sad.

Dear LJ,

I come here every day and read my flist. I have every intention of posting something. I know full well that my sadness over not having as many posts to read from friends is directly related to how often said friends (and by extension, me) post. I know if I post more I'll be contributing to someone else's flist, and they might in turn post more.

But somehow I almost always manage to leave without posting anything. I hate that we've grown apart. For now, though, I think... I think I just don't have time for you.

*sniff*

OH HAI LJ

*sigh* LJ being craptastic every time I want to post makes me not want to pay them anymore. Can you imagine if any other paid service had as much downtime? I can't.

S'anyway. I was gonna post pictures, but I'll wait because I'm going back to the aquarium tomorrow and I'm hoping I'll get better ones. I love my lens but it does not do well in less than stellar lighting conditions and I don't have enough photography education to make it do right. Yet. I'm learning, but I need to play with it more.
wolffe: (basil)
Do you remember when LJ was so hopping we had to take breaks from it? And everybody posted just about every day? Sometimes I wonder what changed. Was it us, with our grown up lives and kids to take care of and so forth and so on? Or was it the net itself with Facebook and Twitter seemingly easier and faster methods of communication?

I dunno. But I miss the interaction here.

What?

Anyone know if there's a way to see a list of journals associated with your email address? I get five copies of every announcement, but for the life of me I can only think of three journals I have currently active. I assume they wouldn't send for deleted journals.

ETA: Trying the "lost username" feature. We'll see if that works.

ETA2: Yep, that worked. And some of the usernames I don't recognize at all. LOL

I just found this community - [livejournal.com profile] the_daily_pet and I'm loving looking at all the pictures. The giant snail trips me out. I want one.

So LJ has come up with this holiday promotion - all paid and permanent account holders get 10 $10 off coupons to give to non-paid friends. On the post, others have pointed out that it's kind of a crappy gift, and most are disappointed they aren't running the free userpic with account renewal promotion.

I wish they would run a promotion that rewards permanent and paid account holders instead of (or more realistically along with) trying to get new paid users.

They won't, so I'll just offer one to any non-paid peoples who want a coupon. Let me know and I'll hook you up.

If you've updated this year, you're fine. If you haven't updated in 2009, most likely you aren't reading this. But if you are and you plan on using your journal in the near future drop me a line and I'll re-add you.
