My favorite thing about platypi (other than how they look, and the awesomeness of monotremes, and that whole poison spike thing) is that their babies are called puggles. PUGGLES!

EDIT: Basically, pretty much everything about the platypus indicates that it was created in the 80s as competition for the Wuzzles plush toys and cartoons.
