Before adding me, you should know: that i am open to making friends with people who are very different from me! i think it's wonderful and healthy to be friends with people who have a different worldview from me, and i always try to be nice and respectful, even when i don't agree with someone.

basic info:
tombstuck, mid 20s, missouri usa

gender and sexuality: bisexual, poly (not currently open to new partners), trans, enby, femboy, they/them

other identifiers: alterhuman, gnome/elf otherhearted

my vibes: silly, horny, friendly, excitable, odd and unusual

I mostly post about: daily life, my current exciting interests, music, and fandom

My fandoms are: I read widely in any fandom if the summary and tags catch my eye, and if the author is a friend! my fandoms in particular are supernatural, homestuck, and marvel stuff (specifically spider-man right now). But I have a lot of other fandoms I'm less active in too.

I'm looking to meet people who: are interested in my writing and will listen to me yapping about it (i will do the same for others!), people who will interact with my journal entries... um, not a dealbreaker by any means but it would be nice to know some other alterhumans, therians, otherkin and things like that, because my brother is a therian, i'm otherhearted, and i don't know any other alterhumans at all.

My posting schedule tends to be: very sporadic! i just created my account recently so it's up in the air, but i plan on being here every day for the foreseeable future.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: i'll add anyone who adds me, but i will probably remove them if i have personal issues with them after that.

i hope to hear from some of you soon!~

Organisational October - Day 17

So my Organisational October is going about as well as the September Stampede! How are things going for you? I hope everyone else is having a more successful month than I am and managing to keep on chipping away at that list of things that need doing. Tell us what's been going well, and feel free as well to talk about the less successful part of your month. What are the stumbling blocks in your life right now that are making things more difficult?

Always keep in your mind that if you have a bad day or week or month (or year in my case), the beauty of our bite-sizing community is that every day is a new day and you can start again today or tomorrow or when life permits. I have to keep reminding myself that just because I've had a run of bad days, I mustn't give up and call it quits, I just need to start with a little bit of getting things done today or tomorrow. These aren't new year's resolutions, it's a daily resolution and so every day we can have a fresh start and while we can be proud and celebrate if yesterday went well, we don't have to give up if it went badly.

So here's the daily plan - don't forget it's fine to tweak the suggestions to better work for you if something doesn't quite hit what your situation needs, you can skip a day, pick a different day, stick with a task from an earlier day that you need a bit longer to finish - it's all cool here!

This post will remain the place to comment until I next get chance to put up a post. I encourage you to tell us how you are getting on and to cheer on fellow posters.

Daily Challenge Table shown below the cut )

Hopefully there's enough information in the table to give you a general guide without being too restrictive - feel free to adapt the suggestions and change out days that don't feel relevant or aren't what you most need. Really importantly, PLEASE do not forget we are all about bite-sizing so we're not aiming to get the whole of a room done, we're looking to target a key area within a space or within a task to make progress on it - this is about starting the process and knowing that we can move towards our goal step by step - not in massive jumps when life, health & energy conspire!

Wishing you all a great weekend.

Name: Agnes

Age: mid 20s

I mostly post about: personal stuff and fandom equally, also my creative projects (I'm a huge writer and artist!) I also talk about my tech projects and such. Health struggles & disability/mental health activism and destigmatization. Cooking. Life goings-on. My OCs. I'm trying to get back into using dreamwidth more, so I'd love to make some new friends!

My hobbies are: writing, digital art, watching tv, making video games, playing video games, crafting, thrifting, technology (mostly self-hosting and personal websites right now), cooking...

My fandoms are: I'm a huge science fiction fan, so right now it's Babylon 5, The Orville, Star Trek (mostly lower decks and star trek online), etc. Also super into Yellowjackets and Psych at the moment.

I'm looking to meet people who: don't mind my journal being a little all over the place, are kind and accepting, love science fiction, art, writing, tech, or making OCs, or creativity in general. People who are spiritual but queer-affirming, pro-choice and open-minded. People who like to talk and don't mind if I'm awkward. People who share my fandoms, especially my special interest which is currently The Orville. Other neurodiverse folks. Or anyone who is cool with the things I mention here!

My posting schedule tends to be: sporadic

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, fatphobia. Please don't be a bigot. Also, I don't wish to add anyone who identifies as an "anti" or believes certain types of fiction should inherently be censored, and will unadd for this kind of behavior.

Before adding me, you should know:  I have autism and dissociative identity disorder. These things make it a little hard for me to communicate, but I promise I always mean well. I also have memory issues.

Climate: A Grim Prognosis

For the past several weeks, I have delved deeply into the content produced by scientific climate change deniers. By "denier" I mean those who argue that global warming is below the range expected by mainstream studies and by "scientific" I mean that handful of actual active researchers in climatology, rather than unqualified opinions. Without exclusion, I've found that these scientific deniers engage in extraordinary selection biases, unfounded speculations, and flawed logic. But, to the untrained eye, I can certainly see how they could be convincing; they appeal to ideological confirmation biases and, of course, they appeal to certain vested interests. Their influence is profound; there are very few climatology journal articles that are in the denier category, but the content makes up the overwhelming majority of related advertorials. The result is a profound disparity between an misinformed public opinion compared to scientific research, which, in a capitalist democracy, is reflected in the politics of demagoguery.

Two days ago, the World Meteorological Organization reported the largest recorded level of atmospheric CO2 and the largest increase in a single year (a reminder that CO2 remains in the atmosphere for a very long time). It follows Trump's decision to withdraw from the 2016 Paris Agreement, which sought to preferably limit global warming this century to 1.5 degrees C above pre-industrial levels, with a long-term objective of below 2.0 degrees. As COP30 approaches it increasingly becomes clear that voluntary agreements to a global problem is biased toward unenforceable lobbying even when adaptive and mitigative technologies exist and even when our first major tipping point (coral reef losses) looms, a situation that has been warned about for years even as fossil fuel subsidies increase - your taxes at work.

I am now in my third year as a climatology postgraduate, after many years of debating the issue and engaging in autodidactic research. When I started formal studies, it quickly became apparent to me that, despite international agreements and technological change, the most accurate trajectory was the RCP8.5 scenario; high-emissions, high-growth, high-population, the highest plausible temperature increase, i.e., the worst case scenario. Maybe it's the risk engineer disposition in me, but I think we should prepare against worst-case scenarios, especially when the costs are high. The problem is that they are so incremental; people understand the accretion of warming as explained by the popular metaphor of the "boiling frog" story that describes how people do not effectively react to creeping changes. Whilst it is a strong and appropriate metaphor, it is also a myth. A frog will react when the water is too hot for comfort. But I wonder whether humans are as clever as a frog.

1. Got the car stuff taken care of. Apparently there have been two recalls (neither of them urgent) and the most recent one requires a part replaced and they don't yet have the replacement parts, so they'll contact us when they get those in, but they did take care of the first, and did a full tune up and all that, and also washed the car (it wasn't in terrible shape, but always nice to get it washed). They did not have a Kia dealership in town when we bought this car, but they do now, which is very nice. It's technically within walking distance, but it would be a long walk, so I picked Carla up this morning and dropped her off this afternoon.

2. It was nice to have the day off. Didn't do anything special, just relax. I had considered putting together the Billy bookcase we bought a couple weeks ago, but decided against it. I know it won't actually take that long (though it has doors, so it will be longer than just the bookcase on its own), but it feels like such a large project. It was so nice with the furniture for the garage, I could just leave it half done and do a bit each day and it wasn't in the way, but this is for Carla's bedroom, so it needs to be done all at once (though I suppose the doors can be done on another day). Maybe this weekend. We really need more shelf space, so that is a good reason to get it done lol.

3. Molly is such a sweetie.

1. We had a nice dinner at Disneyland tonight. The parks were crowded, but it's finally feeling like fall weather, so that made it more pleasant than hot and crowded for sure.

2. Speaking of weather, it rained for a few more hours last night after I went to bed. It doesn't look like we're supposed to get any more in the near future, but I'm glad we got as much as we did.

3. Yesterday at work I saw this sweet potato spread and meant to buy it before going home, but forgot. But today I remembered, and I had a piece of toast tonight with butter and the spread and it was so good! It's not like a sweet potato jam, it's a creamy spread more like peanut butter. The package says you can also spread it on before toasting to give it a real roasted sweet potato feel, so I'm going to try that next.

4. I'm taking the day off tomorrow. On Monday a check engine light went on in the car, no accompanying beeps or message, so it didn't seem urgent, but it did stay on, so Carla called and made an appointment to take it in to the dealership. She's been wanting to get a tune up anyway, and there's some sort of recall that should be looked into as well. The appointment is for tomorrow, and I just decided that even though we have another car I could use, and it's not me taking the car in, work doesn't have to know that, so I put in a PTO request and told my boss I have to take the car to the shop, so I can't come in. (Now today the check engine light was off, but it does still need to get checked out, so we're keeping the appointment.)

5. Look at that leg!

We went down to Disneyland this evening after work. It was windy when we got there, and getting a little chilly, so we both wore sweatshirts, which was nice. I'm sure there will be some hot days here and there still, but I hate how warm it is into October these days, so it's nice to have it actually feeling like fall.

Viper (Naga Brides #1) by Naomi Lucas

Genre:
Science Fiction Romance, Monster Romance, Naga/Snake Romance, Alien Romance, Aliens, Fantasy, Fantasy Romance, Dystopia, Smut

Publication Date:
May 11, 2021

Page Numbers:
302

Read/Finished Date:
October 15th, 2025

Rating:
3/5

Premise:

Long have we been alone.

Without brides, without females to warm us during the long nights. Without sweet mates.
But we see them, from afar, brides that could be ours. Kept away from us by walls and weapons. Females we long for greatly.

Obsessively.

Human females.

And the one with red hair? I want her. I saw her first. I will fight to the death for her.

She is MINE.

So, we’ll come together and make an exchange with their men that will benefit us all.
After that?
To the winner goes the spoils…
Let the hunt begin.

But the red-headed female is MINE.

---
Viper is the first book in a series of Bride Hunting Aliens. With the charm of a snake, and the wiles of a devil, these males will do anything, and I mean anything, for their females.

Review:

Enter a dystopian Earth where humans are the aliens...

Gemma, our female lead, is part of a mission to gain access from a dystopian Earth to keep an alien menace known as the Lurkers from attacking them. When they learn the snakelike people of Earth have it, the males offer up the females for the snakemen to hunt and mate with them.

Vruksha, our male lead, is a pit viper and he has been watching Gemma ever since he first laid eyes upon her; he decided right there and then that she was the one he wanted.

The Naga males make a deal: the technology for the right to hunt and mate with a female. Vruksha wants the red-haired Gemma and he will do anything to take her.

You know, I had a hard time trying to decide whether I loved this novel or hated it. I found myself finally leaning toward the middle, where I have no love nor hate for it. The world-building has some solid bones, but I felt it was missing something. Not quite sure what it was. I am assuming a bit of history because it did make the world slightly confusing, as it doesn't tell us how or why the humans left the Earth, what sort of things the Lurkers are, and what happened mainly to the female Naga species. Maybe I missed something of the latter.

As for the characters themselves, I am on the fence completely, especially with the whole 'me Tarzan, you Jane' mentality that came from Vruksha, but I suppose it is to be expected from a set of snake males who have been waiting for a long time for females.

1. Well, we did get that rain. It started sometime during the night (I did wake up once around four or so and it was already raining by then) and continued on through midday. It was steady and heavy enough that there were some areas that got flood warnings, though nowhere near us, thankfully. The last time we got rain it ended up being just a teensy bit, so it was nice to get some proper rain.

2. Unrelated to the rain, I had already planned to work from the store close to home today rather than going in to the office, so it was nice to just have to drive a couple miles rather than 30 minutes on the freeway in the rain.

3. This cutie.
