[sticky entry] Sticky: Hello!

I love new friends! I subscribe to people that I think look interesting, or whom I have a lot in common with, or that I see commenting elsewhere and like the sound of, so if that happens to be you this post is an introduction of sorts. Of course you can read my profile, but this is extra stuff I guess?

Anyway, I'm 44 years old. Married to Jason who I met in the dark ages college. We have two sons, Jake and Erik. We have a cat, Pilsbury, and a dog, Mouse. I take a lot of pictures. I'm an LJ refugee. I started over there in 2001 and survived all sorts of drama but decided to make the switch in January 2017 because of the lack of secure pages and all that mess over there.

I post about all sorts of stuff. I battle depression, and anxiety. I'm an introvert but am pretty good at socializing when forced. I write paranormal/sci-fi/fantasy romance and urban fantasy.

I can't think of anything else you might want to know. That's me in a nutshell. Stick around if you like, no worries if you don't. :)

I did it! I wrote 40k words! The first draft still isn't done, but now I'm in the habit of writing and I plan to keep going until it's done. I only had to push myself to write a couple of times, and each time when I got started I was able to keep going for longer than I thought. Except once, where I ground out ~800 words and called it a night. LOL

Anyway, it feels good to be a

Mouse in the sun after running himself silly so it's not a wall-o-text post:

I've almost reached my Camp Nano goal! I can't really express how excited I am by this. I have never finished a first draft before. Yes, it's crap rough but I figure I'll give it a week to simmer and then do a first edit. My goal is to do a full edit during July's camp. Then I can work on a sequel in November.

Anyway, my goal was 40k, which I figured would be a good start to the 60 or 70k I want to have eventually. I'm just 3k short, which I hope to finish up today. If I can stay off the internet.

Anybody subscribe to Kindle Unlimited? I'm trying to figure out if it's a good deal for me or not. I'm in the 30 day trial right now. I looked for two books, both on my TBR list. One they had, the other they didn't.  I don't feel like going through the 100s of books on my TBR list to see how many they have. Just wondering if they have most of the books you want to read, if you've found it a good deal, etc.

I didn't take as many this trip as I usually do because I was helping out working the cows, but I did get a few good shots.

Erik, Jake, Ginger (my sister) and Callahan (my nephew).

The boys decided I needed flowers in my hair.

Covered in blood with cow snot in my hair is my happy place. Haha

I already have 880 books in my Calibre database and I've just discovered Bookzz. At least ebooks don't take up physical space, right?

I wonder if there's ever been a squirrel that's afraid of heights. There must have been, I guess, since we have chipmunks. So somewhere along the evolutionary process a rodent like critter looked at his friend and said, "dude, let's go up in the trees. That'll be awesome!" and his friend was all like, "nah man, that shit's scary."

I am SO far behind, but I wanted to make this post real quick. I promise I'll catch up with everyone soon.

For anyone else wringing hands over getting your pics from LJ Scrapbook, this post details how to use Semagic to get them all in one go. When the popup appears saying you have to login to IE I ignored it and all seems to be fine. I downloaded 467 images in under a minute and all of them appear to be present and accounted for.

Yay!!!

36 ODD things about you!

(I keep reading that as OCD and it keeps confusing me.)

1. Do you like blue cheese? No
2. Have you ever smoked cigarettes? For much of my youth, which I regret terribly
3. Do you own a gun? Yes
4. What flavor Kool-Aid? Pink Lemonade or blue
5. Do you get nervous before a Dr Appt? Not for MDs, but every time for DDS
6. What do you think of hot dogs? Slather mayo on the bun and cover it in sauerkraut and they're wonderful.
7. Favorite Movie? I'd need categories. The first that comes to mind is Galaxy Quest, but that's probably because it was on tv recently. Guardians of the Galaxy, The Thing, The Star Trek reboots...
8. What do you prefer to drink in the morning? Tea or Diet Coke
9. Can you do a push up? Not very well
10. What's your favorite piece of jewelry? I don't really wear jewelry. I have a few necklaces I favor, but I guess I'd have to say my engagement ring.
11. Do you have a favorite hobby? photography, sewing
12. Do you have A.D.D.? Nope
13. Do you wear glasses? No
14. Who was your childhood idol? Barbara Hambly who wrote Dragonsbane. As an early teen I thought this book was the penultimate example of story telling.
15. Name 3 thoughts at this moment... I need milk, but don't want to get dressed. Pilsbury needs to SHUT UP. It's not time for him to eat yet. Is Erik jumping on the couch? Yeah, I think he is.
16. Name three things you drink regularly. Tea, diet coke, water
17. Current worries: Getting the boys back to a normal sleeping pattern so they'll get up and not be too cranky Thursday morning when school starts back
18. Current hates: Hates? Ignorance I suppose.
19. Favorite place to be? Home. Covered up with animals and kids.
20. How do you bring in the New Year? Asleep Haha
21. Where would you like to go? Scotland
22. Name 5 people that will do this questionnaire.
a)This is dumb. Why do questionnaires always put this in there?
23. Do you own slippers? yes. Pink bunny ones.
24. What color shirt are you in? gray
25. Do you like sleeping in satin sheets? I did as a teenager. Now I just prefer really soft cotton ones.
26. Can you whistle? not well
27. Where are you now? kitchen
28. Would you be a pirate? I'd rather be a ninja
29. What song do you sing in the shower? I ... haven't sung in the shower in a while, come to think of it.
30. Favorite sports team? University of Alabama Football (Roll Tide!)
31. Favorite food? sushi and mexican
32. What's in your pocket? I'm in my pajamas, which sadly have no pockets.
33. The last thing that made you laugh? The boys being silly
34. What's your favorite animal? Wolf
35. Worst injury? Messed my knee up but good a long time ago. It still hurts. I break my pinky toe on a fairly regular basis (always the right one. What's up with that?). Probably my "worst" injury is my broken brain. Migraines, Depression, my brain is a bitch.
36. How many TV's in your house? In my house? Technically two. But one is in the basement and hasn't been used in several years and we should probably get rid of it.

I'm slowly getting as much as I can transferred over here to DW. I've got all the feeds done, and I think I've gotten all my friends who have also said they've made the leap. Quite frankly, DW seems to be more happening than LJ. This post is an excellent post that made a lot of sense, and I plan to follow a lot of the advice contained therein.

I feel like overall DW is just less controversial than LJ. The administration doesn't seem to make decisions that upset a great deal of the userbase and they've been stable in their ownership and reliability. I honestly just want a place to put my journal entries and interact with people on occasion and this seems like a good one.

If you have communities or friends to recommend, please do so. I'm off to get lost in the rabbit hole of DW. :)

Sad day

With a heavy heart I am moving my journal to dreamwidth. I've been on LJ for 15 years, and weathered many "LJ is going down!" panics, but this one is different. This time I'm joining the mass exodus prompted by the servers being moved to Russia, and more concerning, the elimination of secure pages. I seriously doubt anyone's going to be data mining my journal, but the very idea makes me uncomfortable and I feel like I can no longer support LJ.

Instead I'll move to a paid account on DW and post there exclusively. I do have my account set to crosspost all of my entries, so technically my journal will be mirrored on LJ, but I won't be checking it or commenting there. I hope all of my friends make the switch as well so I can keep up with you. DW has very easy migration tools and it took less than an hour for them to import my 8,000+ entries, all their comments, and my complete profile.

I'm going through my friends list and looking for posts saying if they've moved to DW and what their username is there so I can add them. If I've missed you, please comment on the DW post and I'll add you posthaste. This post over there is public for exactly that reason.

Love, and happy new year!

With pictures, so I'll cut to spare you. (Pictures are just some of my favorites, and don't necessarily have anything to do with the narrative.)

Jake had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle party yesterday. Many friends and one classmate came. I think next year I'll just invite the whole damn class, since he invited 7 friends and only 1 showed up. Anyway, I didn't make near as much stuff this time as I usually do, owing to the fact there was a lot of mass market merch readily available in his chosen theme. I did make ninja masks and mutagen ooze* and I folded 5 origami ninja stars for a simple party game, but that was it. I also had temporary tattoos for everyone. I didn't take a lot of pictures, unfortunately.

Course, 10 minutes after they all got here they were huddled around the Kindle Fire playing Minecraft.

The ninja masks took a while to catch on, but once they did all the kids wanted them.

And the chair picture:

Of course, this is how most of them came out. LOL

*this was way more fun, and more successful than I imagined it would be. The ooze was a big hit as a favor with both the boys and the girls. I have plenty of borax and one bottle of glue left, so this will be a summer activity as well. How to located here.

Here's a picture of a beautiful spider who has taken up residence in one of our Leland Cyprus trees.

I've never bothered to identify them, but we get one or two each fall. This year we have loads. I suspect because the increased rainfall led to increased insect population, ergo more spiders. That's cool with me since they give me a false sense that we could win the battle with the gigantic mosquitoes and flies.

Found the wig for my Andorian costume today.

I need a wig brush because it needs some serious styling. It's super cheap, and the bangs are super annoying, but it'll do.

Now all that's left is to buy some blue paint (I have to go downtown to the Norcostco for that, so probably next week sometime), sculpt the antennae (I've got the model magic and wire for them though), and alter the dress which is way too big for me right now.

I'm considering getting blue contacts as well, but I've never worn contacts so I dunno. We'll see. I look pretty weird with white hair and my natural coloring though.

Anyway, wigs are fun but damn it's hot under there!
