Why is all the really cute fabric in Japan? Even Disney fabric! This is a serious question. I'd like to know why there is such awesome fabric being sold over there that isn't being sold here. Are there that many more home sewers in Japan?

I need to win the lottery so I can buy all the Japanese fabric I want.

I think it might be a combination of that (plus I think home ec classes are mandatory in Japanese elementary and possibly junior high schools), plus the fact that the culture of cute is so prevalent in Japan...

So while people might think it odd for, say, a 40-year-old housewife to collect Hello Kitty in the US... well, it's still slightly odd in Japan, but you do find Hello Kitty-branded toilet paper, perfumes, and household appliances, so clearly they know there's an adult market. Same thing for Disney, and various other cute (but understated, rather than overtly kid-friendly) patterns!
